[Super Late] Required Reading: OCTOBER

I know, I know, it's halfway through October, and I am waaay behind posting this. No, I didn't forget, but in between my (new and more) demanding job - everyone is in that difficult stage of adjustment - and my duties to my family, on top of everything else, I am just up to my eyes nose neck in things to do. But, as they always say, better late than never, right?

First, a recap of how I did last September.

I undertook to read two books: (1) Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, and (2) A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle. When September rolled around, I immediately grabbed my copy of the latter book and was done reading it in no time.  The first book, however, I am still in the process of reading, so it being merely a spill-over from September to October, I wouldn't exactly put it at failure to read the book, right? Right. Anyway, I am currently on page 412 of 529, or 78% done.  I'm giving it until the weekend, and I should be through with it.

But those are not the only books I picked up for the month.  I also managed to finish Patrick Ness' A Monster Calls, to which I gave 5 stars; George R.R. Martin's A Clash of Kings, the second book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, to which I also gave 5 stars, and; a short story by Neil Gaiman, Snow, Glass, Apples, which I also rated 5 out of 5 stars. Hey, I was very generous with the ratings last month!  And why not, when the books clearly deserved it?

Now, for October, I am doing another buddy-read
with my favorite reading buddy Angus. It's another classic, Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell.  It's another chunkster of a book, they say, although I couldn't appreciate its length because I only have the Kindle edition.  We'll be starting the buddy read next week, October 17 (supposedly it should be October 3rd, but I had to put it off for two weeks because of my current workload) so that will most probably eat up the remaining two weeks of October, and will consume most of November, too.

So. What books am I going to line up as required reading for October, since the rules say that I can't pick a book that's being read in another challenge (the buddy-read can be considered as one of those, right?)? After a quick run-through of the thin books on my office cubicle (yes, I have lots of books here, too!), here's what I've decided on:

(1) No Strings Attached by Mina V. Esguerra ~ My copy, which she graciously signed during the 5th major meetup of the TFG at Ortigas last July, is winking at me from two feet away. Plus, I could use some light, chicklit read for variety.
(2) The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum ~ I am not really into rereading books, but since it's been yeeears since I read this favorite book of mine (I was only a little kid!), and I want to read the next books in the series, I thought it was high-time for a reread. It's a short, sweet book, too, just perfect for a "palate cleanser".

I will go back to the SoIaF series next month. Meantime, stay tuned! :) And thank you, Tina, for hosting this reading challenge!

I remember reading (and loving) The Wizard of Oz back when I was a kid. It was one of those classics that I really liked (although I doubt I understood it all).

Oh and No Strings Attached! It's not my favorite Mina book, but I liked it. :)

October 15 is the Sweetest Day for this year, so I think your required October reads fit perfectly!
