Filipino ReaderCon 2012 Filipino Fridays [2]: School of Reading

School of Reading. We all started reading somewhere, and more often than not, we were influenced by someone. Who got you into reading? Your parents? A friend? A librarian? One teacher who always lends out his/her books? How helpful was your school in helping your reading habit / fueling your book addiction?

This week's topic is similar to an ongoing blog project I have, The Spark Project, which features readers and the books that kindled their love for reading. It's a topic every book lover enjoys talking about, and so I am more than happy to share now who got me to start reading.

No one directly influenced me to start reading, but if I were to give the credit to anyone, it would be my parents. After all, they bought the hardbound copy of The Wizard of Oz that I found in our home library when I was all but a little kid. When I was done with that, I read other books I found on our shelves. So, since all of the reading materials that I devoured at a young age were, to be technical about it, purchased and owned by my parents, then they would be the people who indirectly influenced my love for reading.

How helpful was your school in helping your reading habit / fueling your book addiction? I went to the same school for the majority part of my elementary and all four of my high school years, but it is so unfortunate that our library wasn't properly equipped with books and other materials that would help nurture a young reader's budding interest in reading. The library was merely a big, air-conditioned room where you spend your time to study - not for leisure reading. So my book habits were acquired through years of continuous reading, by myself.
