Filipino ReaderCon 2012 Filipino Fridays {on a Monday} [4]: Books and Friends

August 10 - Books and Friends. We will have book discussions hosted by several book clubs during the ReaderCon, so to prepare us for that, let’s talk about books and friendships and book clubs. Are you a part of a book club? If yes, what made you join one? What’s your favorite activity that you have with them? If you’re not a part of one, will you consider joining one? Why or why not?

Or if you’re not (yet) a part of a book club, do you have friends who share the same passion for books as you do? Do you have a “bookish” best friend? If yes, tell us about them! How did you become friends? What’s your favorite memory with them?

YES. I am a proud and happy member of The Filipino Group, a Goodreads-based book club. :)

I stumbled upon TFG and Goodreads merely as an online book- and shelf-organizer in 2010, when a former officemate asked me to confirm her as friend in Goodreads, which she had just joined. I signed up with Goodreads, confirmed her as friend just to humor her, even joined TFG - para naman meron akong grupo. Haha. I added books to my virtual shelves just for the heck of it, racking my memory for books that I've read years and years back and trying to remember whether I liked or disliked it. The first person who added me as friend from TFG is Joyzi, our resident nurse-now-law-student who has taken a temporary hiatus from the group because of her studies. Later on, I would stumble upon Tina's page, would see that she's one of the most followed members, would add her up, she would accept my friend invite, and the rest, as they say, is history. Ironically, the officemate (who's now based in Birmingham, UK) who coaxed me into signing up with Goodreads, hasn't opened it since, and it's me who has found a niche - and friends! - in TFG. :)

The best thing about our book club? You don't just get new titles (and actual books) to read - you also gain true friends. <3

My first-ever meet-up, 2011. Batchmates: Aldrin, Lynai, Angus, Tintin. :)

Book swap over McDonald's junk food!

I won't be going into any more details regarding our group's activities and will instead refer you over to these entries from my book club friends.

It's also Joyzi who first added me as a friend! She was also the first few members who talked to me online. She asked me why I was reading War and Peace, haha.

BUDDY: I think I remember her incredulity that there ARE people who read classics, hahaha! Alam mo naman si Joyzi. Miss YA. :D

PETER: Indeed! See you Saturday, and I'm already thinking of my white outfit! :D

Hi, batchmate! Out of nowhere, I just remember Hailsham and Kathy H. and her "batchmates". I'm still on a Never Let Me Go hangover. Haha!

All right, Monique!

See you! And hey, it's just a white top lang ha (e.g., white blouse, polo, or polo shirt). But if you want to come in a completely white outfit, then go ahead! Hehehehe.
