Required Reading 2013: JULY
And just like that, half of the year is gone. June slipped quietly away, and hello there, July!
Last month, I threw away ambitious tendencies and settled on just two books to read. But even then, I only managed to finish one of them.
Four more books in addition to the book club's book of the month - granted, two are novellas and one is a short story, but still - isn't bad at all, yes? Also, as of June's end, I am already halfway through George R.R. Martin's A Feast for Crows, the fourth installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and that's no easy feat because this is another chunkster, after all. It is also the reason why I picked one of only two - again - books for July.

- The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon - Of superheroes and escapism, 4/5.
- Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri - untouched.
That is not to say, however, that I was able to read only one book for the entire month. Far from it. The thing is, Oscar the Kindle Paperwhite arrived last June 12, thanks to a good friend from the book club who never tires of lending a hand whenever I need one, and I was having such a fun time using my new e-reader that some of the books I did manage to finish reading were digital editions, to wit:
- The Ocean at the End of the Lane* by Neil Gaiman - Of remembering and sacrifices, 5/5.
- Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman - Norse mythology, again, 3/5.
- Queen of the Clueless (Interim Goddess of Love, #2) by Mina V. Esguerra - Hannah's story continues, 4/5.
- Icon of the Indecisive (Interim Goddess of Love, #3) by Mina V. Esguerra - The conclusion of the Filipino mythological retelling, with a YA twist, 4/5.

- A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5) by George R.R. Martin - The fifth installment in the series, and not the last.
- Stoner by John Williams - A bookish friend has lent this to me several months ago but I haven't cracked it open yet. I need to finish it soon because he wants his copy back, asap. :D
I won't be including the book club's book of the month, Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, in the list because I've read that one some years before, so I will most probably just browse through it before the face-to-face discussion come July 27th.

I agree; wait until you've given birth before continuing with ACoK. It's too violent and gross, it might not be good for pregnant sensitivities. Hihi. :)
Thinking of buying, as I have relinquished my Galaxy Tab to my sister, and I read almost exclusively on my phone - but the screen's small(it's an SII) and the battery runs out fast.
Also, congrats on winning UNSEEN MOON on Ficsation! I hope you enjoy the book. :3
For DRM-free mobi files, you can send those to the Kindle email that will be opened for you. You can send PDF files there, too, and it will be transferred via wi-fi -- just like an ordinary email. The files will be sent to your Amazon Cloud and then you can download it from there on to your device.
I am not very good at explaining techie things so perhaps... Tina can do that for you? :) I've had Kindle e-readers for several years already and so far, I am very happy with them. :)
