Required Reading 2014: April
It's 35 degrees outside as I type this, and boy, what I wouldn’t give for a tall glass of ice-cold mango shake right about now. Summer is definitely here – hello, April!
But I’m not complaining. The other day I was thinking, is it just me or did March really take much too long? It felt like the days and weeks dragged by (taking me along with it), and so even with this debilitating heat, I felt glad when April rolled around. Brand new month for reading!
Here are the books I finished reading last month:
I’m still reading The Tudors by G.J. Meyer, which is okay because it’s non-fiction, and I’m in no hurry to finish it.

- The Alienist by Caleb Carr – TFG’s book of the month. The first mystery I’ve read in a while. 4/5.
- A Thousand Years of Good Prayers by Yiyun Li – My first I Dare You To Read book this year, recommended by good friend Benny. Lovely short fiction. 5/5.
- The King In Yellow* by Robert W. Chambers – Referenced by HBO’s True Detective. Weird fiction. 3/5.
I’m still reading The Tudors by G.J. Meyer, which is okay because it’s non-fiction, and I’m in no hurry to finish it.

- Tenth of December by George Saunders – Read-along with bookish friends Honey and Angus. I’ve been seeing a lot of praises for this book, and it won the first Folio Prize so I have high hopes for this one.
- If on a winter’s night a traveler by Italo Calvino – TFG’s book of the month.
- White Teeth by Zadie Smith – Buddy read with Mommy Louize.

I've also read the sequel to The Alienist, The Angel of Darkness. A bit longer than the 1st book, but not as thrilling.
Interesting story about how I got my copy of White Teeth. I got it at a coffeeshop in Boracay! I'm an early riser (like 4 am every day). While R. was still sleeping, I went to a cafe nearby. The cafe had a shelf with books for their customers. I picked up White Teeth, and then after reading it for a while, I asked the owner if she'd be willing to sell it to me. She agreed! But not after calling her daughter in Manila. Hehehehehe.
Oh, we need no excuse to meet up! When are you free? :)
PETER: I truly enjoyed The Alienist but I'm not sure if I'll read the sequel anytime soon. Looking forward to read Calvino and Smith soon, though!
Is the coffeeshop Real Cafe? I think it's the only cafe I've seen around White Beach that has books. Unless, of course, it's a cafe located somewhere else, like off the beach. :)

I also think Peter means Real Cafe with the calamasi muffins!
