Required Reading 2014: August

Aaaand it's August!

As I write this, it's raining cats and dogs outside, and no, it's not because of a storm or typhoon (weather bureau says Jose [international name: Halong] is already within the Philippine area of responsibility [PAR] but is too far to be actually felt) but because of the monsoon rains (or what is locally known as habagat). Bed weather? I know. Bed + book weather? I think I'm gonna cry. :'(

The month of July also rained good books from my end! Take a look:

  • House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski - Horrifying, sad, confounding. 5/5
  • A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens - TFG's book of the month. Oh, Sydney! 5/5

Yes, I only read two books last month, but don't get me wrong: those two packed a whole lotta wallop, separately. Those are two literary heavyweights - literally, too, with respect to House of Leaves, which I read along with three of the finest members of my book club. (Cheers to more of those, buddies!) I wish to elaborate but I think that would be proper for a separate post. ;)

And now, for this month's reading list:

  • The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton - It won the Man Booker Prize last year, and I've been wanting to read it all year. It's another doorstopper at 800+ pages, so I'm reading it right after...
  • Fear of Flying by Erica Jong - The book club's book of the month. Supposedly, the theme for this month is erotica, but in order to tailor the book choices, our discussion mod changed it to autobiographical accounts with sex. Haha.

How about you, what are you reading this rainy month of August? :)

I can't wait for your HoL writeup! :DDDD Thanks again for deciding to make the Reading Buddies thread with Angus.

I've been eyeing The Luminaries for a while because a friend whose taste I trust thought highly of it, but I'm daunted by the size. Report back if you like it!

You are on doorstopper roll! After House of Leaves, it's The Luminaries. Haha. Oh, so Fear of Flying isn't technically erotica pala. :)

KRISTEL: Will definitely holler. ;)

TIN: I know, right?? Haha. Next month maybe I'll pick short stories naman. :)) Yep, Fear of Flying isn't really erotica. :)
