Reading List 2015: May

It’s 31 degrees outside; what a blistering hot summer day! And as Filipinos psyche themselves out for the Fight of the Century tomorrow, I’m here typing up my reading list entry for the month. (I will most likely just read a book or something tomorrow because I can’t take watching these boxing matches; my heart just can’t bear the suspense haha.)

Anyway, my April reading report looks like this:

• High Fidelity by Nick Hornby - TFG's book for April. 3.5/5

• The Known World by Edward P. Jones – On black owners owning black slaves, and more. 4/5

• When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro – On memory, mysteries, and orphans. 4/5

• Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel – Post-apocalyptic lyrical novel, on immortality and being remembered. “Indelible.” 5/5

• The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri – Currently on page 45.

Books not part of reading list but I finished within the month anyway:

• Wonder by RJ Palacio – Choose to be kinder than necessary. 4/5

• Love Among the Geeks by Raissa Rivera Falgui – Sham marriage, geek love. First Dare Book for 2015. 3/5

• Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz – TFG’s book for May, which I finished before April was even over, hehe. 4/5

Like most of my book club friends, I was able to read a substantial amount of books in April. Thanks to a reading challenge c/o our discussion moderator for May, I read and reviewed Wonder within 24 hours. I also decided to squeeze in Love Among the Geeks to get one of my Dare Books out of the way, as the other one, From Here to Eternity, is a chunkster. And because it’s YA and quite easy to read, I managed to read Aristotle and Dante in no time at all.

And now, for May:

• Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel – Second book in the Thomas Cromwell Trilogy. Must read this so that I could also watch the TV series in its entirety.

• The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt – Way overdue, this one.

• Redeployment by Phil Klay – Heard only good things for this one, so here we go.

• Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz – Including this anyway because it really belongs in May, haha.

• The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri – Spillover from April. A bit dismayed to learn that its first part is actually a novella I read last year in The New Yorker, called Brotherly Love. Not being a fan of rereads, I’m taking a while getting past this.
