That's a wrap, 2021!
BUT before that, I have 2 months' worth of reading reports in backlog so let's get to that.
For November, these are the books I finished reading:
- The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu - 5/5 stars! Amazing compendium of stories. Some were Black Mirror-esque, some were lifted from Asian myths, some were historical fiction. The last kind was, predictably, the ones that I enjoyed most.
- Dekada '70 by Lualhati Bautista - 3/5. Book club's book of the month, which was just so-so for me. It offered nothing that I didn't already know.
- we are all completely beside ourselves by Karen Fowler - 2/5. I was honestly surprised when I found that I didn't really take to this book as much as I'd like to. I must have expected too much?
- Her Body & Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - 4/5. There were a bunch of misses but the hits far outweighed those, so that's saying a lot about the quality of the good ones.
- The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman - 4/5. I remember seeing the trailer for its movie version some time ago but didn't actually watch. I could understand why this would be banned by the Catholic church, but it didn't affect me all that much in a religious way, so. It was just a fun adventure!
In December, I finished reading three books:
- No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai - 4/5. After all the fun and magical adventure, this was a heavy read. Very disturbing, but a worthwhile read.
- Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman - 4/5. A collection of fantastical and spin-off stories by Gaiman is always, always an awesome read.
- The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune - 4/5. A pleasant surprise! Super feel-good and a happy read to cap my reading year.
And finally, here's a recap of the reading year that was 2021!
32 out of 35 books isn't all bad, eh? Sure there are re-reads in there but that couldn't be helped, being books of the month for the book club. Given these figures, I thought I'll peg 30 for 2022 as a fair and doable number. Still deciding which ones to include on the list but I will definitely have some new releases and sequels on there.
How about you? Any plans for the 2022 reading year? :)
